August Book Review

It’s BOOK REVIEW DAY! Woohoo!!!

Oh August! I love you. For my crew, August brings our yearly family vacation to California, the return of football, the promise of fall, and the return of carpool just when everyone is over the 108 degree weather in Texas.

This month I have been a little MIA as I have been enjoying the last little bit of summer with my crew! And, of course, I have fit in FOUR great books during this time.

I am SO excited about today’s book review because I think that there is something here for everyone! Make sure to click on the links throughout the blog to head on over to my Amazon store and grab a copy of one of these books for yourself or a friend!

Here we go . . .

Meet Cute by Helena Hunting

I discovered this book when I heard about it from another blogger. Quite frankly, I thought this was going to be super cheesy, rated R, beach read. Which, of course, is why I bought it immediately. HA!

This is definitely a chick lit, and while definitely rated a bit R, Meet Cute had some heavier pieces to the story than with your average beach read.

Daxton Hughes was a child star back in the day, and is now a first-year law student trying to hide under the radar of his former fame. Kailyn Flowers is also a first-year law student, was obsessed with Daxton’s show as a pre-teen, and spends her days during law school trying not to make a fool of herself. This is basically about me and Mark-Paul Gosselaar. Saved by the Bell, anyone? For a few years there I doodled “Shawna Gosselaar”. No shame! #baysidehighforever #zachmorris+shawnawhite=4EVA

But, I digress . . .

Now, several years later, Kailyn and Dax meet up again as she helps his family through some legal issues regarding his sister’s trust. After a tragic death of his parents, he becomes legal guardian of his thirteen-year-old sister, and has his life turned upside down.

Kailyn ends up stepping up to the plate to help, and sweet, sweet friendships start to form. All of the feels in this book. You deal with family drama, overcoming grief, young love, and learning from your past. A chick lit with a little depth.

I loved this book! I loved it so much that I had to work really hard not to ignore my family while at the airport, on the plane, and during our first day of vacation! 😉 Click here to grab a copy for yourself.

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

I love a good suspenseful book, but let me say this . . . this book is C.R.A.Z.Y. CRAZY!

I think all of the people in this book are probably clinically insane, and not one of them has any redeeming qualities. CRAZY!

BUT, for some reason this book just worked for me! I have no idea why.

Alicia and Gabriel were a quite the successful couple. She was a painter, he was a fashion photographer, and they were in love and planning their future together.

That was until she shot Gabriel in the face one night and never spoke again.

Now years after her arrest and her residence in a local psychiatric hospital began, a new doctor has come onto the scene to try to help Alicia, get her to finally speak a word after all of these years, and to possibly make sense of this crazy and mysterious crime.

Lots of twists and turns in this book. Kind of slow in parts, but the fast paced parts of the book definitely make up for it. A fun read! Click here to grab a copy for yourself!

Life and Other Inconveniences by Kristan Higgins

This was my FAVORITE book of the month. LOVED IT! So very much!

Y’all know that I have always loved Kristan Higgins’ early work. Her chick lit books read like a Lifetime Movie, and are super easy to read.

Over the past couple of years, Kristan has branched out from her typical story lines, and has started writing novels with much more depth. Her last book, Good Luck With That, was not my favorite at all. Click here to read my review from when I read this book last November. Even though I wasn’t a fan of her last book, I was PUMPED earlier this year when I discovered her new book, Life and Other Inconveniences, was being released this month. Pre-ordered immediately, and did a little boy band/teenage girl scream when it was delivered a couple of weeks ago.

Oh friends, this book. There is so much going on here. This is chick lit, but with a lot of depth.

Emma London lost her mom from suicide when she was eight-years-old, and she was given to her grandmother to raise.

Genevieve London, the grandmother, was not in the best emotional place to help a suffering child. After suffering her own horrible losses, she was unable to truly love or give much of herself. They, however, made it work for a decade.

Until Emma got pregnant during her senior year of high school, and Genevieve kicked her out of the house and never looked back. Now, eighteen years later, Genevieve has once again reached out to Emma. And her daughter, Riley – now a junior in high school. Why is she reaching out? Now, after all of these years of silence.

This book is all about family. The ups and downs. The mysteries. The heartbreaks. And the love. Just so, so wonderful. I am back on my Kristan Higgins bandwagon. Love this. Click here to get a copy for yourself!

The Wedding Party by Jasmine Guillory

Such a FUN book to end the month of August! I have really come to love Jasmine Guillory books! I read The Wedding Date last September (you can read that review here!) and The Proposal back in May (you can read that review here!). Both books were so precious and fun. Just loved them.

The Wedding Party is the third book in the series, and I think that it may be my favorite of all three! Here is the great thing about this series . . . all three books are kind of happening at the same time. They are just told from different viewpoints and highlight different characters. Each book is entertaining on its own, but reading all three has basically wrapped a pretty, little bow around the entire story. And, of course, big closure with reading all these. You know how much I love closure in my books!

Maddie and Theo are the best friends of Alexa (the bride!). They are her biggest confidants, both included in her upcoming wedding, and both love her dearly. Here is the issue . . . they hate each other.

After a few chance encounters, their dislike towards one another starts to slowly change into a friendship, and then to possibly more. This is definitely rated R, just FYI. And, a classic chick lit story of enemies that find they have more in common than they ever would have thought.

Very easy read! I highly recommend! Click here to grab a copy for yourself or a friend!
