February Book Review
Today is a GREAT day for a few reasons . . .
- I get to see Harlan this afternoon! He has been at a school retreat for the last couple of days, and I need to get my hands on him. So excited!
- Jackson is back at school after a week of being sick! WOOHOO!!! The Beucler House is finally healthy! And, all of the Dude Perfect videos and Harry Potter movies have been binge-watched, so clearly school was the only other option! Ha!
- AND . . . its BOOK REVIEW DAY, friends! WOOHOO!
I am SO, SO, SO excited about this post because I really enjoyed ALL four of the books that I read this month. One in particular, I am obsessed with. AAAGGGHHHH! So good!
Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Last summer, I read Taylor Jenkins Reid’s The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. It was beautifully written, it was raw, it was an incredible story . . . and I told anyone that would listen that I felt like the story HAD to be true. That is how Taylor Jenkins Reid writes books. She makes the characters and the story so realistic that you have to Google to confirm that it is indeed a work of fiction. I became a HUGE fan of her work last summer.
So, for the last six months, several of you have been trying to convince me to read her newest book: Daisy Jones & The Six. I finally cracked it open . . . and, OH MY GOODNESS!
Three things about this book:
1. It is WAY too cool for me. It is all about a rock & roll band in the 70s, and that lifestyle is just in another world.
2. I also had to Google this book to see if Daisy Jones & The Six were real. Sadly, they are not. But, man does her writing convince you otherwise.
3. This may be one of my favorite books that I have ever read. Seriously!
Daisy Jones & The Six takes you on a journey from the inception of The Six in the 60s, all the way to present time. This book is written in an “interview style” type of format, and takes you through the ups and down, heartaches and happiness, and absolute craziness of their journey in chronological order. No matter how haunted some of these characters were, I loved every single one of them. You find yourself rooting for everyone, and just hoping they can all find happiness on a tour bus in the midst of chaos.
While it definitely has the drugs, sex and rock & roll vibe of the 60s/70s, I would say it only hits about a PG-13 rating.
To say that I am obsessed with this book is an understatement! This is one I will think about for a long, long time. SO, SO GOOD!
It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover
This book. Hmmmm.
So, over the last year, I have had a few people recommend this book to me. All loved it. One even said that it was among one of her favorites EVER! Needless to say, I had this book pretty hyped up in my mind.
I really liked this book. I loved all of the characters. Even the truly flawed ones. I loved that this book spanned over a decade, and we were really able to see the growth in some of the characters.
This book tells the story of Lily Bloom. She is in her twenties, lives in Boston, and owns her own flower shop. The story goes back and forth from present day to back when she was in high school and discusses certain events that formed her life.
I really think that if I had not built this book up so much in my head, I would have LOVED it. I mean, I read the last chapter twice just because I didn’t want it to be over. And, maybe that is the issue. It needed another chapter. I would love to get a glimpse five or ten years down the road to get the closure I was hoping for.
But, great book. It Ends With Us has a great message within this book. Definitely rated R! Read it, and then let me know your thoughts. I would LOVE to have a discussion with someone about this book.
Night Road by Kristin Hannah
If you have read my book reviews for awhile, then you know how much I love Kristin Hannah. I always say that she writes the type of books that you feel in your bones. Real, raw, beautiful. There have been some of her books that I have liked more than others, but I have truly enjoyed all of them.
Night Road was a hard one for me. I went in not knowing anything about the book, and discovered about halfway in that the subject matter was difficult for me. In fact, I went to bed one night riddled with anxiety because I thought it was all too much for me. But, I knew I had to get through it. Just more info to tell my therapist one day. Ha!
Night Road is about a mom, her twins, and their best friend. The story spans years, and touches on motherhood, friendship, grief, and forgiveness. It is a beautiful story, that as a mother, made me think heavily on my life. This is a book that I will think back on for years. The story will haunt me. Ugh. Writing “call therapist” on my notepad right now. Oh dear.
As usual, Kristin Hannah’s writing is amazing. However, if you are planning to dive into one of her books, I would recommend starting with another. This book was beautiful, but the moment I finished it, I felt like I had gotten my booty kicked in a boxing match. LOTS of emotions. GREAT book, just not sure it was for me.
Twice In A Blue Moon by Christina Lauren
After surviving my anxiety while reading Night Road, I had to find an easy read. And, friends, I LOVED Twice In A Blue Moon. So precious, such an easy read.
Tate and Sam met and fell for each other fourteen years ago while on vacation in London. Tate had spent the last decade in hiding as the daughter of a famous actor, and Sam was the first person that she told her true identity to. That went well until Sam sold her out to the press.
Now, fourteen years later, Tate is a successful actress and Sam has written the script of the movie that is going to make her career.
This book has great comic relief characters, lots of awkward situations, and a ton of sweetness. This book definitely leans to being rated R. Such a great book, and so happy to have finished up my month of reading with this one. If you are headed somewhere for Spring Break, definitely throw this in your bag.

That’s all for this month! Send me your recommendations! We are headed out of town for Spring Break, so I am going to need some good reads for the trip! Have a great weekend! XO
